Note: Having the correct model number is NOT sufficient information to properly identify a compatible laptop hard drive! Before you order your laptop hard drive, please make sure that your laptop hard drive has the correct connector and platter size. Laptop hard drives are very different from PC hard drives. The biggest difference of course is size. When you look at a laptop hard drive you will notice that it is significantly different from a standard PC hard drive. Most of these drives only measure 2.5 inches. The next big difference that you'll find if you look deeper, is compatibility. You're going to find that you cannot normally take a hard drive from one laptop and put it into another unless they are both the same make and model. The reason for this is that they will all have varied IDE connectors. This means that if you want to recover data from your laptop hard drive, you may have to purchase an adaptor for your PC so that you can hook the laptop hard drive directly into the motherboard. IDE Drives: This is the oldest and most proven type of hard drive interface that has been around since the earliest days of computing history. It uses a standard 44 pin connection to the machine. SATA Drives: SATA came out much later and boasted a faster transfer rate than IDE drives. They are becoming increasingly common in most PC's and Laptops. Solid State Hard Drives: These are built on the same technology that is utilized in flash thumb drives. Because there are no moving parts in flash memory, the drives are capable of higher speeds and greater reliability. |
